This is the shocking moment a van is struck by a 12-foot pipe which flew off the back of a truck, missing the windscreen by inches.

The front of Carl Graven’s Volkswagen vehicle was wrecked after suffered a blow from the steel beam, a fraction of a second after it passed the white lorry in the opposite lane.

Mr Graven, who was reportedly on his way to the title fight between Anthony Joshua[2] and Joseph Parker last weekend when his van was involved in the incident, said he and his girlfriend narrowly missed ending up ‘in a body bag’.

The footage was captured from a dashcam on Mr Graven’s van, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

With very unfortunate timing the pipe flies on to the opposite lane and loops towards the ground just as the van is moving into its path.

At the moment of impact there is a squelching sound as the beam hits the van, with water splashed on to the windscreen, before the driver swears and the vehicle comes to a stop.

Pictures of the aftermath show the front of the van had been badly smashed up, although the two passengers were not injured.

The couple would have been ‘in a body bag’ had their vehicle been a regular car and not a van, Mr Graven said.
