Watch terrifying moment huge panels fly off truck and into busy road

A mum has spoken of her terror after large panels flew off the back of a truck towards oncoming traffic. The incident took place at 8.30am on Tuesday, May 15, on the A380 northbound at Newton Abbot. The mother-of-three from Torquay, was heading to work in Exeter when she noticed the sizeable panels fly off the back of an Anglian Home Improvements truck as she crossed the bridge over the River Teign.

She said: “I was following the truck when I noticed the panels on the back start to move as it crossed the bridge.

The wind can pick up on that section, it’s quite common.

“Suddenly the panels started flying off the back towards me. I was absolutely terrified, I had no idea what they were made of, if they had hit the windscreen it could have been much worse.”

The terrified woman said she couldn’t stop as there was no hard shoulder on the road, and said other cars had to swerve to avoid the panels. She added: “There is no hard shoulder and nowhere to stop on that section, I just had to carry on driving.

One did hit my car and another bit landed in the road in front of me.

“Cars behind were swerving all over the place to avoid hitting the panels. I reported the incident to the police, and wanted to alert people to the potential dangers of not securing a load properly.

“This could so easily have been much worse, and could have caused a serious collision on a busy stretch of road.” A spokesperson for Anglian Home Improvements said: “We take matters of public safety very seriously and we are investigating the incident which occurred earlier this week when foam boarding came off the back of a vehicle.

“We extend our sincere apologies for any distress caused to the motorist affected.”
