Drivers asked to avoid the A19 as crash and HGV tyre blowout cause traffic chaos

A car accident coinciding with a lorry breakdown caused huge tailbacks on the A19 on Monday. Police have asked drivers to avoid the road around the junction of the A1231 in Washington after the incidents, in which no one was hurt. Huge queues built up heading northbound on the around after a collision just before noon.

Traffic was moving more smoothly on the southbound carriageway, though the HGC, which had suffered a tyre blowout, was visible at the side of the road.
