Lorry drivers taken to hospital after serious crash which closed A69 near Haydon Bridge

This is the shocking wreckage caused by two lorries crashing on the A69, leaving the road closed for more than 12 hours. Emergency services were called to the A69 at Haydon Bridge, Northumberland just after 10.20pm on Sunday where the collision between a Greggs lorry and Noble Foods HGV happened. Both drivers, aged 47 and 54, were treated by paramedics and a Great North Air Ambulance doctor on the scene.

One of the drivers was taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care hospital in Cramlington and the other to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The road remains closed to traffic while a “complex recovery” takes place of the two HGVs.

Due to the scale of the recovery operation, which involves the trailers being cut up into smaller sections, the road is expected to be closed until midday on Monday.

Debris left from the smash also needs to be cleared away and inspection work is due to take place on a barrier which was damaged in the collision.

A diversion was put in place via Greenhead and Acomb on the Military Road but traffic is still very heavy. Traffic Sergeant Alan Keenleyside of Northumbria Police said: “This is a very serious collision which saw both drivers taken to hospital. “We would ask anyone travelling in the area to allow extra time for their journey this morning.

“The vehicles are yet to be recovered, so we’d like to remind drivers not to be distracted and concentrate on their journey.”

A spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10.22pm last night to reports of a road traffic collision on the A69 at the junction with the B6319 at Haydon Bridge.

“We dispatched three double crewed ambulances, one crew from out Hazardous Area Response Team, an officer and a MERIT car (the nightime air ambulance equivalent).”

Police would ask anyone who saw what happened in the moments leading up to the collision, particularly passing vehicles with any dashcam footage, to get in touch so they can determine what has happened.
