Road closure near East Midlands Airport prompts warning to holidaymakers

A key road near East Midlands Airport will be closed over the weekend for roadworks to take place. The A453 is used by traffic approaching the airport from the A42 but diversions will be in place between 7.30am and 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, when the road will be shut to the west of the airport. The closure will only affect the stretch of the road between Melbourne Road and Moor Lane.

People approaching East Midlands Airport from the M1 or the north will not be affected.

Various work is going on around the airport as part of the GBP100 million East Midlands Gateway development.

Earlier this week, a new bridge opened over the M1 to divert A6 traffic away from the village of Kegworth.

The new gateway, which will be a transport hub for air, rail and road freight, will create thousands of new jobs but will also lead to more traffic in the area.
