A young garbage truck driver is in a coma after he was hit by a car and left for dead during a terrifying road rage attack.

John Vennell, 34, and his cousin Bradley Connell were driving toward Dandenong in Melbourne[2]‘s south-east at 6pm on Saturday when they became involved in an argument with another motorist believed to be driving a black SUV.

The pair were followed to Glasscocks Road at Lyndhurst, where they got out of Mr Vennell’s Volkswagen sedan to approach the other motorist, who then accelerated and struck Mr Vennell before fleeing the scene.

‘It was bad. He was sitting on about 80km/hr, he didn’t even stop, he didn’t even hit the brakes after he hit him or nothing,’ Mr Connell told 9 News[3].

Bloodied and unconscious, Mr Vennell was left lying in the middle of the road before being rushed to The Alfred Hospital, where’s he’s is now in a serious but stable condition.

‘He’s not well. He’s got a brain injury, lots, probably everything nearly broken.

All internal bleeding,’ Mr Connell said.

One woman posted on Facebook: ‘There are lots of his family and friends who are struggling to comprehend this, myself included.’

Police are still looking for the black SUV involved.

The male driver is described as being of Pacific Islander appearance and was wearing a large straw hat.

Mr Connell claimed the driver also had children in the car and urged him to hand himself in to police.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses who saw the collision or may have dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.

‘To hop out of a car to discuss an incident and and to be callously run down and not stop, it’s quite disturbing to police,’ Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Hayes said.
