Watch: Bystanders help Kaufman County deputy rescue driver from burning truck

By the time a Kaufman County sheriff’s deputy reached the site of a Tuesday morning crash, several drivers had stopped to help. A truck had rear-ended a tractor-trailer outside Terrell and was still pinned underneath when Deputy Conner Martin arrived at the scene. Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s department Wednesday shows over a dozen people surrounding the burning truck, with some trying to pull the driver from the smoke-filled cab.

The deputy climbed into the truck with the bloodied man, who was trapped in his seat by the crumpled dashboard.

As smoke blew in through the shattered windshield, Martin had to duck out for air several times.
