Man dies after being hit by truck on New York Street in Manchester city centre

A man has died after being hit by a truck in Manchester city centre. Emergency services were scrambled to New York Street shortly after 9.05am on Tuesday following reports of a collision. The man, believed to be in his 50s, was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

New York Street has been sealed off in both directions while police begin their investigations.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He remains in police custody for questioning. Images shared on social media show a section of the street, near the Grill on New York Street restaurant, taped off by officers.

Emergency service vehicles can be seen parked on the street.

The full Greater Manchester Police statement read: “A man has died following a collision in Manchester city centre. “Shortly after 9.20am today (Tuesday February 19, 2019), police were called to reports of a collision between a truck and a pedestrian on New York Street in Manchester city centre. “Emergency services attended and the pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 50, was taken to hospital where he sadly died from his injuries.

“New York Street remains closed while investigation work is carried out. “A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He remains in custody for questioning.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
