Pedestrian hit by delivery truck ‘critical’

A pedestrian is fighting for her life after being hit by a delivery truck in North Shields town centre. The ‘serious collision’ happened just after 12.30pm on Monday outside the library on Northumberland Square in the town. A 60-year-old woman was knocked down by a delivery van and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.

She suffered injuries to her back and arm and is currently in a critical condition. Police are now appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision to contact them.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for information following a serious collision in North Shields which has left one woman seriously injured in hospital. “At about 12.45pm today, police received a report that a delivery truck had been in collision with a 60-year-old pedestrian on Northumberland Square, North Shields.

“Emergency services attended the scene and the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries where she remains in a critical condition.

“An investigation is ongoing and police are keen for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who has dashcam footage, to come forward.
