Man in hospital after Gateshead crash involving van, truck and bus

One man has been taken to hospital following a crash between a van, truck and a bus in Gateshead. Emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision on Portobello Road, in Birtley , at around 10.51am following reports of a multi-vehicle collision. Police swiftly closed the road in both directions between the junctions of Penshaw Way and Shadon Way as a huge emergency service response descended on the area.

North East Ambulance Service dispatched the air ambulance, one ambulance and two Hazardous Area Response Teams to the scene. Four fire crews are also in attendance from Birtley, Washington, South Shields and Marley Park.

Emergency services are in attendance at a three-vehicle crash on Portobello Road in Birtley.

The driver of the van has been rescued by firefighters who used cutting equipment to release him. The man has been transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after suffering suspected chest injuries.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 10.51am to a road traffic collision on Portobello Road in Birtley. “We have dispatched the air ambulance, one ambulance and two Hazardous Area Response Teams to the scene.

“One man has been transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead by road ambulance for further treatment.”

A road closure remains in place more than two hours following the collision with drivers urged to avoid the area.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “At 10.58am today (Thursday) we received a report of a three vehicle collision involving a van, a truck and a bus on Portobello Road, Birtley.

“Officers and emergency services are currently in attendance and motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time.”
