Pictures show scene of devastation after fire rips into barn in Somerset village

A barn in a Somerset village was badly damaged after a fire tore into it on Sunday afternoon (July 28). Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received several calls of a barn on fire not long after 3pm in the village of Angersleigh, near Taunton. Four fire engines from Taunton, Wellington and Bridgwater rushed to the scene, along with a water carrier from Bridgwater and a welfare unit from Crediton.

Fire crews confirmed the barn was on fire and a tractor and a forklift truck were inside.

They used two hose reel jets, two main jets and one compressed air foam systems jet. At 4.57pm, fire crews called for a telehandler from Clyst St George Exeter to help as well. Just after 5pm, fire crews said they were making steady progress using one hose reel jet and one compressed air foam systems jet.

At 7.27pm, fire crews removed timber from the barn. Just before 9pm, the fire service said 50 per cent of the 20m x 30m barn was damaged. The cause of the fire was accidental.

A fire service spokesman said: “Four fire engines from Taunton, Wellington and Bridgwater as well as the water carrier from Bridgwater and the welfare unit from Crediton have been mobilised.

“Fire crews have confirmed one barn well alight containing one tractor and one forklift truck.  Crews are at work with two hose reel jets, two main jets and one compressed air foam systems jet. “Update at 16:57 hrs – Fire crews requested the attendance of the telehandler from Clyst St George Exeter to assist with turning over and damping down a wood pile at this incident.  “Update at 17:01 hrs – Fire crews are making steady progress using one hose reel jet and one compressed air foam systems jet.

“This incident will shortly be scaled down to two pumps and a water carrier.

“Update at 19:27 – Fire crews at work with telehandler removing timber from barn and dampening down. “Final Update at 20:57 – Incident involved 1 single storey agricultural building measuring 20m x 30m containing wood, 50% damaged by fire “Crews extinguished using 1 hosereel jet, 1 Compressed air jet , 2 main jets and 1 telehandler.

The cause of the fire was accidental.”
