Witness recalls “extremely traumatic” scenes after 'cyclist hit by pickup truck'

A witness has described the “extremely traumatic” scenes that he witnessed in Dagenham while picking his son up from school today. At around 4pm (Tuesday, July 2), the A124 Longbridge Road was shut in both directions from Lodge Avenue to Lichfield Road due to a crash near the Lidl supermarket. Emergency services, including police and paramedics, rushed to the scene while an air ambulance landed in a nearby park to offer assistance.

35-year-old Kweku Quagraine was travelling through the area after picking up his seven-year-old son from school when he saw and heard the impact.

The scene on Longbridge Road in Dagenham

“I saw it all live as it happened,” he explained. “My little boy goes to school in Newham and we were driving back and I was at the traffic lights with the bus in front of me. “We were stationary waiting for the lights to change and I’m looking ahead when I saw a pickup truck and heard one hit – bang. “I looked up and realised that the lights hadn’t changed to green, so my first thought was that the cyclist may have jumped the lights.

“I pulled across the road so that the traffic could flow in the other direction as it was well before the police or ambulance could get on the scene. “With respect to them though, they got there as quick as they could and a paramedic was first at the scene about 15 minutes later. “While the guy was laying on the floor, he was wailing and trying to get up but in so much pain and he wasn’t very coherent.

“I had to take my son to KFC to get some ice cream after because I wanted to find out exactly how much he had seen.

“For a seven-year-old child, it is extremely traumatic. As an adult, you can sort of process these things, but for a child, it can be very disturbing. “It works out that he only saw people crowding around him as he was in the back, but it troubles me as I’m worried about the guy.”
