Woman airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and another person hurt after A69 lorry crash

A woman has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being cut free from a car following a collision with a lorry near Bardon Mill. Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious crash between a lorry and a car on a stretch of the A69 just after 2pm on Tuesday. Police swiftly closed the road in both directions which has caused major disruption to traffic heading between Carlisle and Newcastle.

One woman had to be cut free from the car involved in the collision by firefighters after becoming trapped.

After being released she was treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries. The North East Ambulance Service also confirmed another patient was transported to hospital via road ambulance. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.

A spokeswoman said: “We were called out at 2.09pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the A69.

“We dispatched three Hazardous Area Response Teams, a double crewed ambulance and requested additional help from the Great North Air Ambulance. “Two patients have been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with one being airlifted and another transported by road ambulance.” The road remains closed in both directions more than three hours after the collision occurred with a large police presence still visible at the scene.

Traffic is being diverted via Wall and Acomb in both directions as emergency services continue to deal with the incident.

A Nortumbria Police spokesman said: “At 2.12pm today (Tuesday), police received a report of a collision between a car and a lorry on the A69 near Bardon Mill. “A female occupant of the car has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. “Emergency services are in attendance and the road remains closed in both directions.”

Three fire crews have also been in attendance.

A Northumberland Fire Service spokesman said: “At 2.14pm we sent two pumps from Hexham and one from Haltwhistle to a collision between one car and one lorry near Bardon Mill.

“One person was trapped and had to be rescued by fire crews before being taken into the care of paramedics.

“Our crews remain at the scene at this time.”
