A1 crash: Van driver airlifted to hospital after being trapped under lorry

A van driver who was trapped under a lorry has been flown to hospital following a crash on the A1. The A1 Great North Road is currently closed northbound between A43 Kettering Road (Wothorpe / Easton On The Hill Turn Off) and A606 (Rutland Water Turn Off). The closure and accident is currently causing long delays, with congestion reaching all the way to the Wittering turn off.

A spokeswoman for the Leicestershire fire service said teams assisted the accident to help recover a driver trapped in his van under a HGV. She said: “The call was received at 2.10pm. “The accident involved one car, one van, and one heavy good vehicle.

“The van driver was trapped under the HGV in his van. The driver was released by the fire service and taken to hospital in an air ambulance.” A spokesman for Leicestershire police force confirmed they were also in attendance to the accident.

She said: “We were called at 2.20pm to a reports of a collision on the A1. “The accident involved a van and two cars. “The fire service, ambulance and air ambulance service are all in attendance along with ourselves.

“The collision happened on the A1 near the A6121.”

Cambridgeshire police are also on scene assisting with the road closure along with the other emergency services.
