Competitors to go head-to-head in North Lincolnshire's Strongest Man competition

Scunthorpe’s sixth annual strongman contest will take place this weekend. The competition will be on to find North Lincolnshire’s Strongest Man for 2019 as the weightlifters show what they are made of. Often attended by hundreds of people, the event sees incredible feats of strength across many different categories, including deadlifting a car.

The competition is organised by Scunthorpe strongman Richard Cowling in memory of his sister Laura, who passed away five years ago. All of the proceeds will go to Lindsey Lodge Hospice, which looked after Laura at the end of her life. Over the past five years, the event has raised more than GBP14,500 for the hospice.

This year’s competition will take place on Sunday, August 18 from 11am at North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe.

Trophies will be available for the top three finishers in both the under and over 105kg categories, along with a Lion Heart award for the person who gives something extra on the day, regardless of where they finished. Competitors traditionally go head to head in classes such as a frame carry, keg toss, Viking press, an obscure objects loading race and deadlifting a car. Last year’s competition was initially planned to be the last, but a downpour of rain meant Richard decided to bring it back again.

Since then, a Scunthorpe man has been named the strongest police officer in the country  in a contest which saw him hauling a 10-tonne truck.

The event will also have a family fun day with bouncy castle inflatables. In addition, the top prize in the raffle will be a men’s mountain bike, which has been donated by Rusty’s Cycles in Ashby.

Tickets are available for GBP1.
