Family shocked to discover thousands of chickens dead outside their home after lorry crash ‘massacre’

This is the moment that thousands of chickens perished in a traffic accident as a lorry crashed into a garden wall. Security cameras show a HGV toppling onto its side leaving bodies, feathers and crates strewn across the road. A stunned family said they were woken by the crash and discovered a “massacre” on their doorstep.

James Simpson-Stern, of Holt Fleet, Worcestershire, said: “We were in bed and heard this massive bang, then looked outside – the gate had gone and chickens were screaming and the lorry was on its side.

“It looks like he didn’t realise there was a corner after the bridge on the right. He has turned and the trailer has sort of flipped over and taken out our fence. “The trailer has toppled and wiped out the fence and gate post.”

The property’s security video shows the lorry crash at speed into the wall. Mr Simpson-Stern, 23, said there were around 5,000 chickens in crates in the lorry’s trailer and he estimates around 75 per cent died. He said the driver appeared to be OK and was out of the lorry by the time his family got outside to see what had happened.

Mr Simpson-Stern estimated the cost to repair the damage to his parents’ property will be around GBP15,000.

‘Chickens died’

West Mercia Police said they received a call at 4.34am about the single vehicle collision, in which a “lorry containing chickens was in collision with a wall”. A force spokesperson said: “Sadly, a number of chickens died as a result of the incident.” A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they received reports of an overturned lorry in Holt Heath at 4.57am and an ambulance went to the scene.

He said: “On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Worcester Royal Hospital for further assessment.”
