Hockley Spa Road crash: Police arrest man after elderly woman dies in lorry collision

A man has been arrested after a woman was killed in a serious lorry crash in Hockley.[1] Emergency services rushed to the scene on Spa Road on at around 12.40pm on Tuesday, August 27. Within minutes the street was taken over by around eight police vehicles investigating the collision.

Sadly, a woman aged in her 80s died after she was struck by the lorry at the junction with Eldon Way. A cordon was in place along a large stretch of Spa Road spanning around 50 metres starting at the Co-op.

Eyewitness Chris Watson, who works for OC Motor Repairs, said: “I was in my motor trying to get out of Eldon Way when I saw all the nurses from the surgery run out to treat her. “She looked elderly.

Fire and police got here pretty quick.”

Police reopened the road at around 4.20pm and shortly afterwards a recovery truck arrived to take away the lorry involved.

Today (Thursday, August 29) Essex Police[2] has revealed that a man has been arrested in relation to the incident. A spokesperson said: “A 68-year-old man from Wickford arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving has been released under investigation.”
