M53 closed: Man killed after being hit by lorry on busy motorway

The M53 has been partly closed after man was hit by a lorry. Witnesses described a white sheet lying on a section of roadway near junction 4 – and both police and ambulance are on scene. A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We were contacted at 10.50am to reports that a male had been in collision with an HGV on the Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M53 in Wirral.

“Officers attended at the scene at junction 4 of the motorway close to the sliproad for Clatterbridge. The male has been pronounced dead at the scene.” According to travel service Inrix: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, a lorry involved on M53 Northbound from J5 to J4.”

The North West Motorways Police said: “Due to police incident on M53 at junction 4, both carriage ways are closed in area for foreseeable time, please avoid area,” the Liverpool Echo reports.
