Six police officers have been gunned down and two more were trapped in a house with the shooter as an hours-long stand-off unfolded in Philadelphia. A drugs raid on a home in the Nicetown area of the Pennsylvania city turned into a dramatic shoot-out on Wednesday night. Police said officers carrying out the drugs warrant were forced to escape through windows to escape “a barrage of bullets” from the gunman.

The six injured officers were rushed to hospital and two others were left trapped inside the house where the shooter was firing from. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said he feared a “potential hostage situation”.

The gunman continued to fire on a SWAT truck parked outside the home as the dramatic shoot out continued into the night following the raid at 4.30pm on Wednesday (9.30pm UK time). Local police sergeant Eric Gripp urged people to stay out of the neighbourhood as the situation remained active.

“The suspect remains barricaded as PPD Officers continue to attempt to communicate with him,” Sergeant Gripp tweeted at about 9pm (2am UK time). “Many of [the officers] had to escape through windows and doors to escape from a barrage of bullets,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told a news conference.

Police called the man’s phone, talked with him over a microphone and involved a family member in the negotiations, the commissioner added.

“I’m worried about a potential hostage situation and we’ve got to get that resolved,” he said, adding that he believed the two officers trapped inside the home were not wounded.

“We are trying to get him to come out peacefully,” he said. “There’s no indication that he’s trying to surrender, we do know that he is still alive, there’s no question of that because of the shots that keep ringing out.” The SWAT team at the scene were later able to rescue the two officers who were held hostage, Philadelphia police said.

They rescued the officers and three suspects by stealth, without the gunman knowing they had entered the home, the commissioner said. Police moved in about five hours into the standoff and the suspect was taken into custody. The force had warned local residents to remain inside their homes and stay out of the area after hundreds of rounds were exchanged in the shoot-out.

Two other officers were also injured in a car accident while responding to the shooting.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and had been monitoring the situation, the White House said. Local media reported the shooter appeared to have a high-powered weapon and a significant amount of ammunition.

The incident follows a string of mass shootings in California, Texas and Ohio in which gunmen used semi-automatic rifles. “I’m a little bit angry about someone having all that weaponry and all that firepower, but we’ll get to that another day,” said Mayor Jim Kenney after visiting three of the wounded officers in hospital.

All the injured officers have since been released from hospital.
