Police appeal after A30 horror crash that left a woman critical in hospital

Five vehicles were caught in the collision on Wednesday, including a lorry that was towing two trailers and a caravan.

This was the scene of the horror crash on the A30 at Cheriton Bishop on Wednesday

It is believed the HGV overturned after hitting the central reservation. Police, paramedics and an air ambulance were scrambled to the stretch between Okehampton and Exeter.

Highways England has been working to repair the carriageway through the night, however lane closures remain in force.

A woman in her 30s remains in a critical but stable condition after the pile-up on the A30 at Cheriton Bishop

In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police urged anyone who saw something just after 7.30am to come forward.

“Police, fire and ambulance were called at 7.40am today [28th August] following a collision involving a large number of vehicles. “Involved were three cars – a Ford Ka, a Renault Megane and a Ford Fiesta – a Ford Transit van, and a four-vehicle combination of a lorry towing a small and large trailer plus a caravan. “The female driver of the Ford Ka sustained multiple serious injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance.

The woman, in her 30s, remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition. “The male driver of the HGV also sustained a serious leg injury and was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital”. Devon and Cornwall Police

Lane closures remain in force on Thursday morning after six vehicles were caught in the collision on the A30

On Thursday morning, Highways England confirmed one lane would remain closed westbound for further repairs.

“A30 both directions between Pathfinder and Woodleigh – despite our crews best efforts, it has not been possible to repair all the damage tonight so lane 2 will remain closed until a relief crew can continue the repair work and equipment can be recharged”.
