Woman in 'critical condition' after being hit by lorry in Rochdale

A woman is in a ‘critical condition’ after being hit by a lorry in Rochdale. The 60-year-old was airlifted to hospital following the crash on the A640 Milnrow Road on Tuesday. Emergency services were called to the scene – close to Howard Timber between Fishwick Street and Wood Street – at around 11.50am.

A green Iveco Stralis truck was turning off Milnrow Road when it hit the woman, GMP said in a statement. The driver remained at the scene to speak to officers. The road was closed for around four hours while investigation work was carried out.

No arrests have been made.

Police are appealing for the driver of a purple or blue Nissan Qashqai, seen in the immediate vicinity just prior to the collision, along with any other witnesses, to come forward. PC Louise Warhurst, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the woman and her family as she remains in hospital and we’re doing all we can to support them.

“Whilst I would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch, we’re particularly keen to speak to the driver of a purple/blue Nissan Qashqai who left a building supplies company, by the scene, only seconds before the collision. “I want to stress that they aren’t in any trouble but we believe they may hold key information to enable us to piece together the circumstances surrounding this collision.”
