Dramatic pictures show lorry falling into sinkhole at Toby Carvery in Gravesend

Carvery-goers watched  in horror as a huge sinkhole opened up in a Gravesend car park. A DHL lorry had pulled up at Toby Carvery to make a delivery this morning (September 24) but the road caved in below it. It happened at around 9.30am in the private car park off Coldharbour Road.

Eyewitness Anna Allen, who turned up just seconds after the ground split, said: "I spoke to the drivers. They were a little shocked and couldn't believe it happened. "They said they thought they hit a pot hole then the lorry started to fall in with the rest of the floor.

"Then they got out quickly to see the real damage. "I must say the three delivery drivers from the lorry handled this very well.

"They remained very calm and made sure no one else was hurt along with Toby Carvery staff who were quick to seal off the area." Pictures show the front of the trailer drooped below the surface of the car park which caused the cab to elevate upwards towards the sky.

The scale of the huge sink hole was revealed after the vehicle that fell inside it was recovered.

Yellow paint was sprayed around the circumference as a warning while big metal barriers were erected to prevent anyone from falling in. Officers also attended the scene to ensure the area was safe while the vehicle was removed.

'Area of the car park closed'

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 9.44am on Tuesday (September 24) regarding a reported sink hole in a private car park on Coldharbour Road, Gravesend. "Patrols attended the scene and an area of the car park was closed while the owners made arrangements for repairs to be completed."

Toby Carvery's parent company Mitchells & Butlers has been approached for comment.
