Hockley Spa Road fatal crash: Woman who died after being hit by a lorry is named

A woman who died after being hit by a lorry in Hockley[1] has been named as 81-year-old Sylvia Hart. Emergency services rushed to the scene on the junction of Spa Road and Eldon Way at around 12.40pm on Tuesday, August 27. At least eight police vehicles were in attendance with paramedics while Spa Road was cordoned off for several hours.

Ms Hart died at the scene after being struck by a lorry as she crossed the road. Police reopened the road at around 4.20pm and shortly afterwards a recovery truck arrived to take away the lorry involved. Officers since confirmed that a 68-year-old man from Wickford was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and was released under investigation.

A post mortem was carried out by Dr Simon Payne at Southend Hospital, who gave a provisional cause of death as head and chest injuries.

The inquest into the death, which opened today (Monday, September 9) at Chelmsford Coroner’s Court, has been adjourned until October 29.
