Lorry ploughs into back of Volvo on M1

A lorry ploughed into the back of a Volvo car that was stranded in lane one of a Midland motorway when the driver failed to spot the stationary vehicle. Police say the broken down car was destroyed after the HGV crashed into it in the early hours of the morning. Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said on Twitter the crash happened on the M1 southbound between Junction 29 for Chesterfield and Junction 28 28 for Alfreton.

Police say the lorry driver had “failed to see” that the car was broken down in lane one. Shocking images released show the back of the black Volvo completely caved-in, as well as significant damage to the blue lorry.

Officers said that anyone sitting in the back of the Volvo could have been seriously injured or even killed. They have also warned drivers if they break down on a live lane of a motorway or a major road to get out quickly and call 999 as soon as possible.
