Many contributed to Walk A Mile's success

To the editor: Woo-hoo, Berkshire County! Thank you for turning out this past Third Thursday for another amazing Walk a Mile march to stop rape, sexual assault and all forms of gender based violence.

Every single one of the nine Berkshire walks has been incredible and this year was no exception. Almost 900 walkers from all walks of life, from throughout our County, strutted, danced, rode and wobbled through the finish line, every one of them standing up and stepping out against violence in our community, every one sending a message to survivors that you are not alone, that we care about you and won't let your suffering go unnoticed and unchallenged in our community. You raised over £90,000 to support the life-saving services, prevention education, and advocacy that Elizabeth Freeman Center provides on a daily basis to adults and children in every nook and cranny of this county.

We organize this event on a shoestring so that over 96 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to our work. Many of our 28 business and organizational underwriters walked the walk and the event could not be the success that it is without them. And we could not do this event without the scores of volunteers who help with everything from loading and unloading the truck provided by Habitat for Humanity, set up, outreach, press, sound, music, photography (pictures will be loading very soon on our Facebook), providing our sweets, counting money, holding poles and staffing our tables.

Walk a Mile is truly a community event and demonstrates our ever-growing, diverse, committed community movement for a safer and brighter future. Thank you, all! Janis Broderick,
