Police tweeted to say the motorway carriageway is likely to remain closed through rush-hour. A driver whose dashcam captured the aftermath of the horrific crash said it was awful to see. The man, who does not want to be named, was driving towards Huddersfield past the crash which happened at about 10.40am today.

He said: “It was awful – it really upset me. “The air ambulance had landed and the engines were off. An artic was 150 metres east with its front offside corner missing.

He had been through the grass on the central reservation.

“A car and caravan were damaged on the hard shoulder; a car was half on half off a recovery truck and the recovery truck cab was destroyed.

Another looked like it was either under the wrecker or was being towed by the wrecker when hit, plus at least one other vehicle behind the screens where the doctors were working.”
