Family was sat metres away from lorry that smashed into garden wall

A family – including a young child – has been left in utter shock after a lorry ploughed into their front garden wall as they sat in their living room. Emergency services were called to the smash on Ashton Road, in Oldham , at around 12pm on Thursday. A HGV had smashed into a brick wall at the front of a property.

The driver, a man in his mid-50s, was checked over by paramedics at the scene, but was not injured. Members of the family said they were sat in the front room at the time of the incident, just a few metres away from the crash. A man who lives at the property – who asked not to be named – said that his family was ‘in shock’.

His wife and his five-year-old daughter were taken to Oldham Royal Hospital, but returned home a few hours later.

“Everybody is okay,” he added. “My wife was scared so she was taken to hospital. “She is okay, she was just in shock.

“She was just in the front room when it happened and it was scary for her. “It happened so quickly.”

The family was forced to leave the house while the truck was towed away and debris cleared from the road. A ‘substantial amount’ of leaked fuel had to be cleaned up by firefighters Oldham council highways workers.

One resident on Ashton Road said he was sat in his front room and ‘it sounded like a bomb had gone off’.

Ashton Road was closed off this afternoon while the incident was cleared.

It has since reopened.
