Grandmother's warning to drivers going wrong way down road

A grandmother is calling for motorists to stop driving the wrong way down a one-way street near Sleaford before someone is seriously injured. Liz Waters, from Billinghay, says it is only a matter of time before someone is hurt due to drivers going the wrong way down Handley Street in Sleaford. She says she regularly comes across motorists and cyclists going the wrong way down the road, despite the fact it is clearly signposted as becoming a one-way part way down the street.

“It’s a danger,” the 74-year-old said. “Luckily children don’t tend to use the road. “I was driving down there the other day and a car tried to pull out the wrong-way as I came in. He had to reverse into a parking space and he’s lucky that was there or he would’ve had to go all the way back.”

Liz, who is a retired truck driver, says people should be more sensible when using the road.

“There are often cyclists going down there – it’s not sensible,” she said. “People are not careful drivers these days. “There was one cyclist who started being abusive to me when I told him he was going the wrong way. I said he’d be going one-way to the hospital if he doesn’t watch it.

Handley Street in Sleaford becomes a one-way street halfway down it

“Somebody said to me they’re probably strangers in town, but I don’t think that’s any excuse.

If you’re driving in a town for the first time you should pay special attention to the road signs.” Liz added that she thought more needed to be done to enforce the fact it is a one-way system. “They’re demolishing an old building on that street as well so it’s going to be chaos,” she said. “Someone needs to monitor it, they’re always talking about fining people for riding on the pavement, but there’s no one enforcing it here.

“It also happens in Westgate where you’ll also sometimes get people going the wrong way.”
