Lorry veers off into field after shooting across roundabout on 'road of death'

A lorry appears to have gone the wrong way over a roundabout at speed on the notorious A1307 ending up in a field. Chris Cullum, who came across the accident early Sunday morning (October 6) said the driver must have been “belting it” along the road which has one the highest number of fatalities in the county. Chris first noticed the accident after seeing metal debris on the roundabout between the A1307 and the A107 near Hanchett End, Haverhill.

The roundabout on the A1307 where the accident happened was strewn with metal debris

He said: “It was lucky there no one else around at the time.

If there were people waiting at that junction they would have been wiped out. “It’s a busy road, I dread to think what would have happened if it had happened later in the day. “It looks like he was belting it along that road and completely misjudged it.

All the lorries do it, everyone is always so impatient on this road.

“The roundabout has been marked as one of the places to be upgraded. I don’t see why we can’t have average speed cameras all the way down it. “How much does it cost?

The council seem prepared to spend money on Milton Road or Histon Road in Cambridge.

When you think about how many more accidents happen on the A1307 you’d think it would be better if it were spent making that safer.”
