M1 live traffic updates as 'serious incident' shuts road

A stretch of the M1 has been completely shut off to traffic after what Highways England are referring to as a ‘serious incident’. The crash happened between junctions 19 and 20 on the southbound carriageway, and people are being advised to find an alternative route. The closure is in place between Rugby and Leicester, around the area of Lutterworth and Leicestershire Police are reportedly on scene.

There are already delays of around five miles on the approach to the incident, which is thought to have happened at around 7am this morning (Friday October 4). The crash involved a lorry and a car. The driver of the car sadly died at the scene, and Leicestershire Police are now appealing for anyone with dashcam footage, or who saw the driving of the lorry or car prior to the accident to come forward.

This comes after an earlier crash on the M1 northbound between junction 28 and 29, up around Chesterfield and Mansfield.
