25 quirky things which are bound to happen between now and New Years in Cambs

With less than 50 days to go until the big day it’s understandable that people are starting to get into the Christmas spirit across Cambridgeshire. While some people get into the festive swing of things back in November others strictly wait until December 1, but one thing is for sure Cambridgeshire loves Christmas and very soon it will be consuming us all. The streets will be full of sparkling lights, shopping centres packed with frantic shoppers and the turkey aisle in the supermarkets will resemble a sort of rugby scrum for the best bird.

No matter where you are in the county there are a few things which are bound to happen in the lead up to the big day and the new year. So, without further ado we present to you the quirky things guaranteed to happen between now and the new year in Cambridge.

The First Noel

1. People will queue for hours and hours to get into King’s College Christmas Eve carols.

No matter how cold and rainy it may be people will be out there for a long time and sadly most won’t be successful. 2. A cafe will bring out a crazy but delicious festive hot drink.

Whether it’s a little corner cafe, a Costa or Starbucks we fantasise about these drinks being on sale all year round and can’t get enough of them when they do. 3. A punter will dress up as Santa.

Someone does it every year, it’s basically a tradition, and we love it.

4. The singing reindeer will be back at Coton Orchard Garden Centre. The kids will either love them or be terrified of them, and quite frankly we aren’t sure how we feel about them either!

5. Buskers around the city will get festive and wear Santa hats. The festive spirit will take over the city including in the music they are playing and the outfits they are wearing.

6. The Empress Pub. That is all we really need to say isn’t it?

It is after all the epitome of Christmas in Cambridge.

7. People will strip off and go swimming in the Cam on New Year’s Day. No matter how bitterly cold it may be there will be still be brave swimmers out on New Year’s Day.

8. The Coca-Cola truck will visit Cambridgeshire – we hope! “The holidays are coming!” We all know the song on the advert but a lucky few also get the chance to see the truck in real life.

It made a stop in Peterborough last year so fingers crossed it comes again! 9. A Santa on a homemade sleigh will go round your village.

It’s inevitable, and no matter how old you are you can’t deny it puts a big smile on your face. 10. Grantchester barrel race on boxing day.

Yet again another bizarre tradition we all know and love here in Cambridge.

11. Scouts will come round knocking for donations. It happens every year and it’s either carol singers or Christmas donations but it is the time for giving after all!

12. Carol singers will come in their hoards. Like we said it’s what to expect when you get a knock on the door.

Some are tasteful and in tune, while others are definitely not. 13. Sidney Street will be full of Christmas party punters drunkenly swaying in the roads.

Rolling out of the Regal and All Bar One will be work party after work party this festive season. 14. Grand Arcade will whip out their slightly creepy angels.

Yes all the Christmas decorations are lovely and bright and make everyone feel all cosy inside but we can’t deny the angels they hang up every year are slightly alarming. 15.  We will get excited about snow and never get any. We read the forecasts and watch out the windows in hope of a white Christmas but more often than not it’s just freezing cold.

16.  Santa Express sets off from Peterborough.

All aboard! The Santa steam train on the Nene Valley Railway is another festive tradition here in our county which is visited by hundreds of visitors from far and wide. 17.

Parker’s Piece turns into our very own answer to Winter Wonderland. I mean The North Pole event is not quite the London attraction but it’ll do very nicely for us. 18.

All of Newmarket Road will be insufferable for a whole month. It’s bad enough as it is, let alone with the masses of Christmas shoppers which will be rushing to get their last minute deals and wrapping paper. 19.  A festive Dinky Door will appear in the city.

We are hoping for a little Santa workshop door this year!

20.  A  Z-list celebrity will come and switch on the Christmas lights. Each year they roll out another star or ex X Factor runner up which is the most likely choice to switch on the sparkling lights this year. 21.

Offices will be full of people wearing hideous Christmas jumpers because why not? We can’t wait to see the streets full of happy people walking to work in their brightly coloured and fuzzy knitwear. 22.

The Grand Arcade and Grafton Centre will be full of last minute shoppers panicking about presents. If you want a little bit of entertainment, head down to one of the shopping centres the week before Christmas, and it will do you nicely.

Christmas 2019

23. Going out for a Christmas drink and spotting a person you went to school with, who you awkwardly ignore and who awkwardly ignores you back.

Everyone comes home for Christmas, and we mean everyone, so expect to see people you never thought you would ever see again but this time in a knitted reindeer jumper. 24. Shopping centres insisting on blasting Christmas tunes to get everybody ‘in the spirit of things’, either that or someone will play them on the piano near John Lewis.

Get ready to hear “well I wish it could be Christmas everyday”, more or less everyday because that seems to be a big trend in the lead-up to the big day. 25. All the supermarkets will run out of turkey.

It’s just bound to happen so make sure you are prepared and get your bird early!
