All lanes open on A500 after fire destroyed lorry and 'explosions' woke hundreds

A road in south Cheshire has reopened after a huge fire which ripped through a lorry. All lanes are now open on the A500 which runs through Crewe , Nantwich and Stoke-On-Trent. The road shut in the early hours of yesterday morning (November 20) following the fire.

Hundreds of people across the region reported hearing loud explosions after the HGV went up in flames. The D Road’s northbound carriageway from the A53 Etruria Road (Basford Roundabout, Etruria) to A52 City Road (City Road Interchange, Stoke-On-Trent) was shut for more than nine hours yesterday.

The fire took place near Shelton New Road shortly after 4am on Wednesday, causing chaos for commuters and waking hundreds of residents nearby. No one is believed to have been injured in the collision.

At around 4am this morning, Thursday November 21, Highways England said:  “All lanes now open on  A500  at Shelton New Road.”

Traffic officers and teams worked through the day and night to make the road clear. One lane had reopened yesterday at 2pm but the entire stretch of carriageway was closed again overnight to allow resurfacing work to take place due to the blaze damaging the road surface.
