Bicyclist Killed When Truck Driver Hits Her In Irving Park

CHICAGO — Outraged bicyclists are planning to create a “people-protected bike lane” Wednesday night at the site where a bicyclist was killed earlier in the day. The bicyclist, a 37-year-old woman, was killed when a truck driver hit her in Irving Park, police said. At 6:59 a.m., the woman was biking south on Milwaukee Avenue along the side of a truck when they got to the intersection of Milwaukee and Kilbourn avenues, police said.

The light was green and the truck turned right onto Kilbourn. The woman was in a bike lane but was in the driver’s blind spot, and the truck hit her and she rolled under it, police said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not immediately know if the driver, a 21-year-old man, was cited. An investigation was ongoing. Bike Lane Uprising will create a “human bike lane” 5-7 p.m.

Wednesday at Milwaukee and Kilbourn avenues to “honor [the woman’s] life and draw attention to this issue,” the group wrote on Facebook.

Organizers asked attendees to bring lights and signs to ensure they’re seen.
