Shocking dashcam video shows the moment an ‘impatient’ BMW driver overtakes a lorry – narrowly avoiding a head-on collision – and then slams on his brakes.

Andrew Warner, of Burgess Hill, West Sussex, pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court on Friday to driving without due care and attention and was fined GBP600.

Warner, 46, had been driving behind the lorry on the A272 near Haywards Heath on March 12 before he dangerously overtook him.

Hair-raising footage sent to Sussex Police shows him racing past the HGV on its dashcam and almost smashing into an oncoming car.

The HGV driver catches it all on dashcam and the footage was handed to Sussex Police.

After cutting back in front of the HGV, he brakes sharply twice, causing the lorry to nearly rear-end him.

Warner was given eight points, a GBP600 fine and told to pay GBP85 in court costs and GBP60 in victim surcharge.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: ‘This dash-cam footage helped to secure a conviction of careless driving against a man from Burgess Hill.

‘The video shows a BMW overtake a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) on a single carriageway – narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction – before cutting back in and braking sharply.

‘The incident was captured on the A272 near Haywards Heath on March 12, and sent to Sussex Police via Operation Crackdown.’

PC Tim Critchlow, of the Operation Crackdown team at Sussex Police, said: ‘It appears Warner has grown impatient with following the HGV and taken out his frustrations by overtaking it, and then brake-testing right in front of it.

Warner brakes twice once he’s positioned himself in front of the truck.  He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court on Friday to driving without due care and attention and was fined GBP600

‘This is an extremely risky manoeuvre, as a car stands little chance when faced with the impact of a 35-tonne truck.

‘He was fortunate to avoid colliding not only with the HGV, but also the vehicle travelling in the opposite carriageway.

‘We’ve released this footage to highlight the dangers of poor driving behaviour, and to demonstrate that we will prosecute anyone caught committing such offences.’

More than 300 drivers have been prosecuted in the past 18 months following dash-cam footage sent to Operation Crackdown.
