Lorry fire at 3am sparks M6 rush-hour chaos with drivers stuck in three-mile jams on both sides of major motorway

Motorists faced three-mile tailbacks this morning after a huge lorry trailer fire shut the M6 motorway in both directions after sending smoke billowing into the air.

The blaze in Warwickshire which broke out at about 3am between junction one for Rugby and two for Coventry caused half-hour queues for rush hour drivers.

Highways England said the northbound carriageway was eventually opened after being shut for several hours during the early hours due to the intensity of the fire.

Motorists faced three-mile tailbacks this morning on the M6 after a huge lorry trailer fire

Vehicles were also gradually released on one lane of the southbound carriageway from 8am, with normal traffic conditions expected to be restored by about 10am.

Highways England had urged users to follow the ‘Hollow Triangle’ diversion, which involves exiting the M6 at junction two onto the M69 northbound to junction one. 

Motorists were told to then take the exit to the A5 eastbound and continue to the A426 junction, before taking the A426 southbound to rejoin the M6 at junction one. 

A Highways England spokesman said: ‘The M6 in Warwickshire is closed southbound between J2 (Coventry) and J1 (Rugby) due to a HGV trailer fire.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue are on scene managing the incident.

‘There are delays of at least 30 minutes above usual journey times on the southbound carriageway between J3 (Bedworth) and J2 with congestion spanning several miles and the whole length of the junction. 

‘Specialist crews are working at scene to have the carriageway reopened as soon as possible. 

‘For traffic approaching the delays locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and you may wish to reroute or delay your journey.’

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman tweeted: ‘Appliances from Bedworth, Nuneaton and the water bowser from Coleshill attending a severe lorry fire Junction 2 to 1, M6 causing massive delays.’
