'Pandemonium' at Oxford Road station as platforms closed after broken-down train causes major delays

Commuters have been hit with heavy delays at Oxford Road station after a broken down freight train caused chaos across the network.    Passengers have described scenes of pandemonium as they attempt to enter the station this evening. A number of photos on social media show scores of people waiting outside the station, amid reports that people are being stopped from entering.

It is believed that services heading towards Oxford Road from Liverpool Lime Street and Salford Crescent have been affected. The freight train has since been recovered, but passengers using the station say they are still experiencing disruption. A spokesman for Northern said: "A broken-down freight train near to Manchester Oxford Road has caused significant disruption for our services this evening across Manchester.

"As a result of the incident Northern services heading to Oxford Road from Liverpool Lime Street and Salford Crescent have suffered severe delays. "The freight train has now been recovered and we are working to get our customers on the move again."
