Thieves tried to rip a cash machine from a foyer at a service station by using a fire hose and a truck while people were inside. Four men looped the hose around the freestanding ATM at Moto Services, Great North Road in Gonerby Moor near Grantham and then attempted to drag it out with an Iveco tipper truck on Tuesday, November 19. However, their attempt when drastically wrong after the hose snapped - and the recoil smashed the front doors.

A spokesperson for the company said: "The thieves tried to steal a free-standing ATM from the foyer at Grantham Service Area by looping a fire hose around it and attempting to drag it out with a truck. "The hose snapped and the recoil from it smashed the front doors. "Luckily this incident happened in the early hours of the morning and there were only a handful of people, including staff, in the building.

Fortunately no one was hurt. "Moto did not need to close the site because customers were able to use a separate entrance, away from the scene of the damage, the cost of which is currently being assessed. The ATM was undamaged."

The group fled the scene in a dark colour vehicle just before police arrived at the scene.

In an appeal for witnesses, the force revealed that a trailer and Iveco tipper truck were left abandoned at the scene. A force spokesperson previously said: "We are appealing for anyone who was driving in the area at around this time and has dash cam footage to contact us. "We would also like to speak with anyone who can assist with our investigation."
