A man has been charged after an elderly woman died after she was hit by a tipper truck on Sydney's northern beaches.

Police and paramedics tried to save the 96-year-old woman on Tuesday by performing CPR at the scene of the accident, on Opala Street in Belrose. 

However, despite their efforts she died there.

The 53-year-old truck driver was taken to hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Manly Police Station.

He was charged with negligent driving occasioning death and not reversing a vehicle safely.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Manly Local Court on February 12.
