Man charged with drink driving after serious crash in Gateshead

A man has been charged with drink driving after a serious crash in Gateshead which left two women trapped in a car. Emergency services were called to Smithy Lane between Lamesley and Harlow Green on Tuesday at 4.30pm after a crash involving a car and truck. Two women in the car were stuck inside and had to be rescued by firefighters.

They were then both taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

A man has since been charged in relation to the crash, Northumbria Police has confirmed. Christopher Scully, 32, of Lady Park, Gateshead, has been charged with driving while above the legal alcohol limit and having no test certificate. He is due to appear before magistrates in South Tyneside on January 22, 2020.

Two fire crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) were called to the scene, as well as police officers and paramedics.
