Driver cut out of taxi after two-car Thornton Road crash

A TAXI driver had to be cut out of his vehicle by firefighters after a two-car collision onThornton Road in Bradford[1] this morning. The crash involving a VW taxi and an Audi blocked the B6145 both ways for a couple of hours. The taxi driver was cut out of his black Volkswagen Passat by firefighters and taken to hospital by ambulance.

The vehicle was left standed in the middle of the major road. The other vehicle involved was a white Audi Q7 SUV. The Audi ended up embedded in the garden wall of a house on the busy Bradford main road after crossing the verge and pavement.

The collision happened just down the hill from a bus stop and speed camera. The incident was also near Thornton Beckfoot School. A spokesperson for the police said the crash was reported at 9.51am.

Two vehicles were involved, a black VW Passat and white Audi Q7. Damage was caused to two other vehicles. Enquiries were continuing.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire[2] Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the accident at 10.13am. They said a man was trapped in one of the vehicles and was extricated by firefighters. The accident occurred between Bell Dean Road and Leaventhorpe Lane and caused traffic to build up in the area.

Leaventhorpe Lane was also blocked as lorries used that road. A witness said the collision was at high speed involving the white Audi and the taxi. A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called at 9.50am to reports of a two-car road traffic collision.

Two ambulances and a clinical supervisor attended the scene. Two patients were taken by ambulance by Bradford Royal Infirmary. In a statement, Councillors Sue Duffy, Richard Dunbar and Beverley Mullaney (Lab, Thornton and Allerton), who represent the area, said: “Whilst it is obviously disconcerting to hear about road traffic collisions, especially near a school, our understanding from speaking to the police is that those involved were not seriously injured and that there were some short term road closures to deal with the aftermath of the incident.

“We understand the police are investigating the finer details and should anyone else have any information then they should report it direct to the police.” The scene of the crash was near to an accident in August 2018 in which was man was seriously injured. The driver of a VW Touareg pulling a trailer lost control near the Tyke Pub.

It hit some traffic islands and then jack knifed.
