An angry elephant chased a panicked driver who was forced to reverse his lorry at speed – and ended up having part of his bonnet ripped off by the beast.

Startling footage shows the wild animal racing after the truck in Veeranahoshalli, near Nagarhole National Park, in southern India, last Wednesday.

The driver holds open his door and sticks his head out while reversing down the road – with the furious tusker gaining on him.

Moments later, the trumpeting elephant reaches the front of the vehicle and bangs its tusks on the bonnet as several men’s voices can be heard shouting, ‘Hey!’.

The lorry starts to slow down and almost swerves off the road, just as a metal panel comes flying to the ground.

The vehicle then stops and the elephant is seen heading in the opposite direction farther up the road.

Nobody inside the lorry was hurt and the elephant gradually wandered away.
