Man arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after pick-up falls from bridge in St Ives

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a pick-up veered off a bridge and fell 20ft onto another vehicle. Police officers, paramedics and firefighters were called to Tregenna Terrace, St Ives, at about 10.40pm on Saturday following reports of a collision. The driver of the pick-up, a man his 30s was taken to hospital following the dramatic incident.

He escaped with only minor injuries. Police say he has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were called by the ambulance service to Tregenna Terrace, St Ives, at around 10.40pm on Saturday 4 January with reports that a vehicle had gone over a bridge. “The silver pick-up truck was on its roof after it dropped a significant distance into a car park and landed on top of another vehicle.

“The fire service also attended the scene. “The driver of the vehicle, aged in his 30s, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.”

In a statement, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 22:42 Critical Control received a 999 call multiple request for police, fire and ambulance after a road traffic collision.

The caller reported that a vehicle had left the road and fallen down a step drop into a compound and onto another car. “One appliance from St Ives, one appliance from Hayle and the Rescue Tender from Tolvaddon were mobilised, along with a Flexi Duty Station Manager. Critical Control also made immediate contact with Police and Ambulance Control Rooms.

“On arrival fire crews were the first emergency service on scene and were urgently conducting a scene survey to ascertain whether any casualties were trapped in the vehicles, one of which had fallen approximately 20 ft onto a parked car. “One casualty was found to be out of the vehicle and received emergency care by firefighters until the arrival of Ambulance Service. Crews made the vehicles safe using stabilisation equipment and the incident was handed over to the police.”

One witness said: “A car has through the wall at Tregenna Terrace into the private car park between the dentist and fell about 20ft.”

Another described it as a “horrific accident”.
