Man crushed to death by lorry on busy high street

A man has died after being hit by a lorry on a busy high street. Named locally as Jason Bent, the pedestrian was hit by an HGV on Peckham High Street around 1pm on Wednesday. The dad-of-one, who was 48, died at the scene after being struck close to Burger King.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "We were called by London Ambulance Service at 12.58pm on January 8 to a collision in Peckham High Street, Southwark involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

"We dispatched an ambulance crew, two medics in cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer to the scene. With the first of our medics arriving in under three minutes. "We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance by air.

"Sadly, despite the efforts of medics, a man died at the scene." "The pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. We are working to inform next of kin.

"The lorry driver has not been arrested and is assisting police with their enquiries."

The road was closed in both directions for a time as emergency services including Metropolitan Police, London Ambulance Service (LAS) and London Fire Brigade attending.

Any witnesses or those with dashcam footage are asked to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 3432/8 Jan.
