Man dies in head-on crash outside East Midlands Airport

A man in his 20s has been killed in a head-on crash outside East Midlands Airport last night. The crash involved a tipper truck and an Peugeot 207. The victim – who is the third person to die on Leicestershire’s roads in five days – was a passenger in the car.

The crash happened at about 10.40pm on the A453 at the airport entrance . The driver of the Peugeot is in a stable condition at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham while the truck driver was not injured in the crash. The A453 was shut for several hours overnight while specialist officers carried out a detailed examination of the scene.

Detective Constable Louise McMahon, from the Leicestershire Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “At the time of the collision, the Peugeot was travelling along the A453 away from the direction of the M1 motorway and the truck was travelling eastbound in the opposite direction. “I am keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle beforehand to get in touch. Alternatively, anyone with dash cam footage is also encouraged to contact us.”

There were two fatal collisions at the weekend.

One in Swinford near Lutterworth saw a motorcyclist pronounced dead at the scene at 4.30pm on Saturday, while a male driver was killed after his car came off the A47 between Hinckley and Leicester on Friday night.
