Man jailed for theft and string of motoring offences

A 39-year-old man has been sent to jail after stealing a tipper truck, alongside a string of motoring offences. Nicholas Edward Hufton, of no fixed address, was handed an 80-day prison sentence by district judge Gerald Chalk last Friday. Hufton pleaded guilty to four charges before West Cumbria Magistrates court.

The court heard on December 15 last year, he took a Ford Transit tipper from Egremont without the owner’s consent. On the same date he also drove a Ford Transit van on Main Street, Egremont, otherwise than in accordance with a license, and without the necessary insurance. Hufton also failed to provide a specimen of blood for a laboratory test without reasonable excuse to do so.

Judge Chalk said a custodial sentence was appropriate because the offence was so serious.

Hufton must also pay a GBP122 victim surcharge, and is disqualified from driving for just over 19 months.
