Police video shows car crashing into lorry on Dorset road

FOOTAGE of the terrifying moment a BMW driver lost control of his car and ploughed into a lorry has been shared by Dorset Police. Nigel Roy James Duck, 58, was behind the wheel of the high-powered car when he accelerated past another vehicle in Gravel Hill, Oakdale, Poole on Wednesday, June 19 last year. Dash cam footage then shows the BMW 320 swinging wildly across the surface of the carriageway before spinning in front of an HGV travelling in the opposite direction.

Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene after the collision, which happened just before 7.50pm. Duck, who was injured in the crash, was taken to hospital, and officials kept the road shut until 10.25pm. Police launched an investigation, and Duck, of Palmer Road in Poole, was issued with a postal requisition to appear at Poole Magistrates’ Court for an offence of driving without due care and attention.

He appeared in the dock last week to admit the charge against him. Magistrates sentenced him to a GBP400 fine, a GBP40 surcharge and GBP150 costs. His driving licence was also endorsed with five points.

Lorry driver Frances Ray-Williams has since posted on Facebook: “I was the driver of the truck and I am so grateful to Dorset Traffic Cops as the officers did everything they could for me. “I only hope this person knows the upset and trauma I went through.” Her husband, Stephen Ray-Williams, said: “If we hadn’t been in that truck at that time, the two young girls in the car behind us would have been killed.

“We had stopped, because I knew he was going to hit us.” The crash happened just months before a man in his 80s suffered life-threatening injuries in Gravel Hill when his silver Ford Mondeo was involved in a collision with a Romanian-registered lorry. The elderly man was flown to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

Sharing the footage online, officers from the county’s roads policing team, Dorset Traffic Cops, said: “It’s real life. Not a video game. We only get one go at it.

Don’t risk throwing it away.

“The driver of this car was recently convicted at Poole Magistrates’ Court for driving without due care and attention.

“He received a GBP400 fine and five points on his licence.”
