Footage has emerged of the terrifying moment a truck slammed into a hatchback and dragged it down a busy highway in peak afternoon traffic.

Shocked drivers watched on in horror as a white Kia Picanto was pulled along by the bigger vehicle on the Cumberland Highway at Smithfield in Sydney's south-west just before 4pm on Monday.

Dashcam from a vehicle behind the truck captures the motorist trying to get the truck driver's attention by beeping his horn.

'This guy doesn't even realise it- what a f*****g dumb c***!' the motorist is heard saying as he drives past the unfolding incident.

The shocked driver inside the Kia Picanto was believed to be shaken but unhurt.

The car only sustained minor damage but had to be towed away.

It's understood the truck driver self-reported the incident to police shortly afterwards.

Footage of the frightening ordeal has since gone viral on various community pages on social media.

The NSW Police Traffic and Highway Control Command also shared the shocking footage on its Facebook page.

'That is nuts,' a bewildered viewer commented.

Another added: 'Bad day at the office.'

Others praised the truck driver for self-reporting the incident.

'It can happen when a car try to overtake truck and suddenly merge in front of him ..and at that point its totally a blind spot for truck driver so its unfortunately an accident not a negligent driving for truck but may be a negligence driving by car driver,' another person commented.

A NSW Police spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia that Fairfield Police are aware of the incident and that investigations are continuing.
