Two killed in M1 horror lorry crash

Two men have died after a lorry crash on the M1 this morning (January 4). Bedfordshire Police said both men were drivers of the lorries involved. Police were called at 6.43am to the crash on the M1 southbound between Junction 13 and Junction 12, between Brogborough and Toddington, just outside of Milton Keynes and Luton.

Emergency services attended the scene of the crash, but despite their best efforts both drivers of the HGVs involved were pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed. The southbound carriageway remains closed until further notice, with Highways England estimating closure until the early hours of tomorrow morning (January 5) and a diversion route has been put in place.

The closure remains in place so police can carry out further recovery and investigation work at the scene. Sergeant Aaron Murphy from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit said: “This was a serious collision which has taken the lives of two people so we are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage from around that time, so we can piece together the circumstances which led to this tragic incident. “I’d also like to thank the public for their co-operation and patience during the recovery operation.”
