A woman who fought for her life after being hit by a drink-driver while she was out on a walk has been hailed as 'inspirational' after she returned to the scene of the crash five years later.

Kady Middleton, 26, and her then-boyfriend Louis Bronstein, 30, had gone on a post-dinner stroll on a country lane in Woolscott, Warwickshire, when a 4x4 ploughed into them head-on.

The journalist, who had to learn to walk again, detailed the accident in a Twitter thread five years on, describing it as 'the day her life changed forever'.

Kady Middleton (pictured), 26, who fought for her life after being hit by a drink-driver has been hailed as 'inspirational' as she returned to the scene of the crash five years later

Describing the moment she was hit by the vehicle, she wrote: 'I was alone, in a ditch and I remember not being able to move.

'I was making this groaning noise that I couldn't stop (I guess because I was winded) and it was cold and silent around me.'

Kady describes lying in the ditch thinking 'this is it' before a passerby, who was the local GP, stopped his car to help after seeing her ear muffs strewn in the road.

'Another car came through and Dr Ian tried to flag it down, it was a truck and managed to swerve Ian, and the rubble in the road, and zoom off into the distance... we later found out it was the same guy coming back to have a second look. He left us... twice,' she wrote.

Kady, who now lives in Southampton, explained the next person to stop was a nurse, whom she says kept her awake by asking her questions 'when all she wanted to do was go to sleep'.

'The third person was a neighbour, the lights from his car showed Louis... Louis had travelled a little further down the road and was twisted into the hedge row.

I was in no state to say "Oh by the way my boyfriend is around somewhere too," I had no idea what was going on,' she wrote.

Kady went on to explain how she was rushed to hospital before staying in intensive care for the next two weeks, undergoing countless operations.

At one point, the journalist had to have a three-hour operation to locate a burst artery in her stomach before doctors found fluid in her chest.

'On the trauma ward Louis was in the room next door and when we were both a little better, we got wheeled into each other's rooms but I'd always just cry because he had to use a mirror to look at me. He had a broken back and couldn't sit up. It was so emotional seeing him so hurt,' she wrote.

'The police came to visit, they asked me questions and filmed it.

As soon as I heard the age of the suspect I knew who it was.

'A local from the village who we'd see occasionally in the pub. And guess what, he was drunk. Not only was he drunk, he drove off and left us... twice,' she added.

Kady explained that the police found the suspect's smashed up vehicle in his driveway and he was hiding when they broke his door down.

She told how his first excuse was, 'I thought I'd hit a deer', adding: 'As I went through his windscreen, I'm pretty sure he saw me.

'The court case came around and I got to see all the pictures of my hair in the broken windscreen, the dents from our bodies and all the gruesome details that we never knew.

'I sat in the visitor's box of the court room with his family behind me and they cried when he was sentenced.'

Truck driver Alistair Clutton, 37, from Rugby, admitted two counts of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and was was jailed for two years and eight months.

He was also banned from driving for four years at Warwick Crown Court in December 2015.

If we hadn't been so lucky, his life could've also been ruined.'

Drink driving should be zero tolerance.'

And one tweeted: 'Wow Kady you're an inspiration. I remember it happening and all over the local news. Horrible to be living through it but you're looking pretty well now.

Made of stern stuff.'
