Car bursts into flames near Junction 9 of M40

A DRIVER had a lucky escape after their car burst into flames on the M40. Firecrews raced down the motorway after the car caught fire on Saturday afternoon. It was travelling along the M40 and was a couple of miles away from junction 9, the exit near Bicester, when it went up in flames.

The driver had pulled into the hard shoulder and made an escape before three truck loads of firefighters hosed down the fire. Read more: Oxford commuter caught in 'virus scare' at Paddington Two teams arrived from Bicester and the other came from Banbury.

Firefighters said the car had 'malfunctioned', but it is not known how it caught fire. Taking to Facebook, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue shared a video of the scene. Queues of traffic can be seen on the other side of the road opposite the incident, and traffic could be spotted filing through the outside line.

At the time firefighters worked with Highways England officers and Thames Valley Police to close the road with cones, before it was opened an hour later.

Fortunately the occupants were able to exit, after pulling over due to the car malfunctioning.
